UPCOMING EVENTS

OPTIMAL RECOVERY - RESTORATIVE YOGA WORKSHOP
with Dario Fredrick

Saturday, November 4th 2006, 3:00 - 5:00 pm

$20 - Students of all levels and non-athletes welcome.

Location: Turtle Island Yoga
7A Mariposa, in downtown San Anselmo

Restorative poses promote balance in the commonly overworked systems of the body, particularly the nervous and endocrine systems. The high-energy aspects of daily activities, whether they be exercise or work, can place significant stress on the mind and body, stimulating the “fight or flight” response of the nervous system. Restorative poses reduce and even counteract this response, promoting better recovery and greater peace within.

The workshop is limited to 20 students, pre-registration is recommended.

Dario Fredrick has studied Yoga for 14 years in the US and with the Iyengars in India. With a Master's degree in Exercise Science, Dario integrates his knowledge and experience in exercise physiology with the many facets of yoga. He understands the particular needs of active people and those new to yoga, teaching with sensitivity to limitations and injuries.

Learn how to apply the principles of Ayurvedic cooking to your daily food preparation.

Ayurvedic cooking is a mystery to many and simplicity to those who know its secrets. When food is prepared with due regard for the diner, greater nutritional value is imparted to the foods. Everyone can master these principles and bring greater nurturance to themselves and others through the foods they prepare and eat on a daily basis. By remaining present with the food preparation, the energy of the cook informs the quality of the meal; the food tastes better and greater balance is experienced by all.

Mary Thompson, CAS has been teaching fundamentals and clinical protocols to students at the California College of Ayurveda since her graduation in 1997. She also has developed and taught Ayurvedic life skills to numerous groups through independent classes, workshops and retreats. Her recognition that conscious cooking leads to healthful dining inspired her to develop cooking classes that empower people to incorporate the principles of Ayurvedic cooking into their daily lives. With her business, The Ayurvedic Approach, she has provided seasonal cooking classes both in Grass Valley and in the Bay Area.

TIP OF THE MONTH

Winter Tips for Increased Immunity
by Archana Rao, BAMS

Winter is kapha season, represented by the natural elements of earth and water. However, certain vata provoking qualities such as dryness, cold and wind are sometimes prominent during winter days, so a proper understanding of how the seasons affect our health is beneficial.

DIET
According to Ayurveda, the digestive fire is strong during this period. Foods such as whole wheat bread, steamed vegetables, hot soups and ghee are good for this season. Winter is also a good time to add meat to your diet, preferably chicken and turkey that are easier to digest.

EXERCISE
Yoga postures that help to open the chest, stretch the throat, drain the sinuses and relief congestion such as the bow or lion pose are highly effective. Regular breathing exercises (pranayama) are also useful.

THERAPIES
Warm sesame oil massage on the whole body before a bath is highly recommended to keep the circulatory system functioning smoothly.

HERBS OF THE SEASON
Recommended herbs for the season: pippali, black pepper, ginger and liquorice.
