Dear Readers

Summer is just around the corner and it is the time of the year where feeling light and energetic carries us through the myriad of activities and events that come with the season.

If your summer calendar is filled with planning out of school activities for your kids, extensive travel for business or vacation, or is just filling up with new appointments (or old ones you could not keep up with!), then feeling great while you are doing all of this does not have to be a struggle.

Treat yourself like you do your car! Isn’t it amazing that as one of the wealthiest nations in the world, we take a lot of pride in caring for our cars; we can’t ignore the oil changes, fluid flushes, tire changes or regular maintenance that our cars need to live long. Yet, when it comes to best performance for our bodies and fuel for our spirit, our investment in this often takes the back seat and we either feel guilty taking time to do this or brush aside the discomfort and stress, convincing ourselves that it will eventually pass.

This summer, we encourage you to nourish your precious body and take the time to flush out the waste and clean out the filter. Our summer detoxification therapies can jump start your vital life force energy needed to live a long and radiant life. Go ahead – the only real luxury you need is simply the time for yourself to balance your spirit!

Wishing all of you a summer filled with playfulness, joy, and abundant vitality!

Namaste

AYURVEDA AND YOGA FOR INCREASING YOUR PRANA

Being in sync with the internal and external rhythms of nature is essential to our well-being. One of the gifts of yoga and its sister science, ayurveda, is their ability to engender in us a growing sensitivity to our own prana so that we learn to move through our lives with steadiness (sthira) and ease (sukha). These two Sanskrit terms are familiar to most yoga students from an oft-quoted aphorism in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra: sthira-sukham asanam. This is sutra 2.46, and is most commonly translated, “Posture (asana) [should be] stable (sthira) and comfortable (sukha),” but is more literally translated as “Resolutely abide in a good space.” Becoming established in “good space,” however, is only possible when our prana is healthy. And cultivating healthy prana is a process that extends beyond the edge of our yoga mat into every aspect of our daily lives. When we start infusing our yoga practice, lifestyle, diet, and relationships with sthira and sukha, we pave the way for a life of balance and spiritual insight.

Join Scott Blossom for an evening of dialogue and reflection on how Ayurveda can enhance our yoga practice and teaching for living in rhythm with our prana.

AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO WELLNESS : TIP OF THE MONTH by Stephanie Lauren Brown

The summer is a time when we often find ourselves packing and re-packing our suitcases for all of those fun outings in the sun. But with excessive travel comes the unbalanced discomforts that may manifest in our bodies in unpleasant conditions such as constipation, headaches, or insomnia. This summer, treat your body like the temple that it is and take a few moments in preventative care to nourish your body inside and out.

After a long day of sightseeing or hiking, give your feet a treat and massage them with a little sunflower or olive oil to promote grounding energy in the body. Follow with a warm footbath and toss in a handful of Epsom salts and a few drops of cooling, grounding essential oil such as Lavender, Jatamansi, or Sandalwood. This ancient ritual has been used for centuries to remove excess heat from the body and promote sound sleep.

Internally, we can avoid constipation while traveling by taking a few capsules of the natural herbal formula, Triphala, after meals to aid in smooth digestion and elimination. Triphala can also be taken before bedtime as a bowel tonic to ensure an easy movement in the morning. And while iced beverages can be refreshing on a hot day, when taken with meals they can actually prevent proper digestion. When dining out, ask for your water without ice, or even sip hot water with lemon to spike your digestive fire. Save those iced drinks for a cooling treat by themselves in the afternoon when outside temperatures peak.

Triphala is available at all major health food stores and also available at Safronya retreat.
