Ayurveda and the Three Doshas
Ayurveda recognizes the existence of five basic elements:
earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements conglomerate
within the human body to form the three biological forces or doshas
that govern the physiological principles of all bodily functions
called Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Vata dosha is associated with air and space and
promotes movement and lightness in the body. As this dosha is identified
by space and air, Vata people tend to generally be thin and light
physically, dry skinned, energetic and mentally restless.
When in balance, there is proper coordination of all body functions
and normal movements associated with digestion and eating. Imbalance
may result in nervous problems, hyperactivity, sleeplessness and
headaches.
Pitta dosha is identified through the metabolic
properties of fire and water elements. It is associated with the
digestive functions of the body, helping digest ideas and information,
stimulating one’s intellectual pursuits.
A person with a strong Pitta dosha often has strong digestion and
sharp concentration. Imbalance manifests itself in irritability
and excessive anger, leading to stress-related disorders such as
heartburn and ulcers.
Kapha dosha carries the metabolic properties of
earth and water providing stability and solidity to both the physical
and emotional self. It governs immunity and resistance to disease.
Kapha individuals tend to be strong physically and they emotionally
exhibit calmn and patience when balanced. When imbalanced,
intolerance and insecurity may emerge.
According to Ayurveda, each of us has a unique blend of Vata, Pitta
and Kapha, which is also known as a person’s constitution
or Prakriti. The proportions of the doshas will determine if an
individual is living a healthy and balanced life: If one’s
Prakriti is imbalanced, feelings of discomfort and distress can
manifest themselves in many ways.
Through the use of essential oils, massages, specific dietary changes
and Yoga training Ayurveda helps restore the right balance in one’s
individual, ultimately leading to a healthier and more balanced
lifestyle.
